The Department of Media, Maharishi University of Information Technology, Noida, in coordination with IQAC, successfully conducted a workshop titled "News Craft: Shaping Stories for Media." The workshop aimed to enhance students' understanding of news writing, storytelling techniques, and journalistic ethics.

The resource person for the workshop was Mrs. Poonam Singh, Editor of ‘ResponsibleUs’ and Co-founder of Edukida. With her vast experience in journalism, she provided valuable insights into the art of news writing, media literacy, and the evolving landscape of digital journalism.

Opening Ceremony

The program commenced with a Guru Puja and a traditional lamp lighting ceremony, symbolizing the pursuit of knowledge and wisdom. Dr. Shambhoo Sharan Gupta, Head of the Department of Media, formally introduced Mrs. Poonam Singh, highlighting her extensive experience in the field of journalism and her contributions to media and education.

Key Highlights of the Workshop

Mrs. Poonam Singh shared her expertise on the various features of creative news stories and emphasized that news writing is an art that requires precision, clarity, and creativity. She stressed the importance of structured storytelling and how journalists should craft their reports to engage and inform the audience effectively.

One of the key takeaways from her session was the correct way to read a newspaper. She explained that merely going through headlines is not enough; a complete and critical understanding of the news is pivotal in journalism. She encouraged students to analyze, interpret, and question the information they consume to develop a well-rounded perspective.

Additionally, she discussed the role of correct grammar in news writing and provided practical examples to explain the importance of tenses in crafting clear and effective news reports.

Discussion on Sustainability and Emerging Trends

During her interaction with students, Mrs. Poonam Singh shared real-life experiences from her journalism career, shedding light on the challenges and ethical considerations in reporting.

A significant part of her discussion focused on the need for sustainability and environmental journalism. She emphasized that climate change, environmental protection, and sustainable development are becoming crucial areas in news media and urged students to explore these topics as emerging fields of impactful journalism. She encouraged budding journalists to write about environmental issues, as raising awareness on these topics is essential for global progress.

Conclusion and MoU Signing

The workshop concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Shambhoo Sharan Gupta, who appreciated Mrs. Poonam Singh for dedicating her time and expertise to inspire the students. Dr. Mithilesh Kumar, Assistant Professor, Department of Media, formally ended the session by expressing gratitude towards the guest speaker and the organizing team.

A key outcome of the workshop was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Maharishi University and the web portal ‘Edukida.’ This collaboration aims to provide students with a platform for publishing their work and gaining exposure in media, as well as creating job and internship opportunities in the field of journalism and digital media.

Impact of the Workshop

The workshop was an enriching experience for students, offering them practical knowledge about news crafting, responsible journalism, and media ethics. It bridged the gap between academic learning and real-world media practices while inspiring students to develop their skills in storytelling, research, and critical thinking.

Through such initiatives, the Department of Media continues to provide students with valuable industry exposure and opportunities to grow as future media professionals.
