Guest Lecture on “Tuberculosis and the Role & Responsibilities of Clinical Pharmacists”

Objective of the Guest Lecture: The guest lecture aimed to provide insights into the global burden of TB and the pharmacist's role in its effective treatment and prevention. And also enhance students' knowledge about TB management and the significant contribution of clinical pharmacists in combating this infectious disease.
Participating Students: B.Pharm and D.Pharm students were the primary attendees of the guest lecture.
The School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Noida, in coordination with IQAC, organized a guest lecture on the theme “Tuberculosis and the Role & Responsibilities of Clinical Pharmacists” on January, 24th 2025 (Friday) in the pharmacy department, MUIT Noida Campus.
The speaker of the guest lecture was Dr. Yogendra Mishra, an accomplished Clinical Pharmacist. He holds a B.Pharm, M.Pharm, and Ph.D. from the University of Sydney, specializing in Clinical Pharmacy. Since 2003, he has been serving at Westmead Hospital, Sydney, contributing over two decades of expertise in patient care and medication safety. The lecture commenced with the felicitation of the guest speaker by Dr. Shweta Bajaj (Dean, SOPS).
The lecture began with an introduction to Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the causative organism of TB. The speaker discussed the modes of transmission, high-risk populations, symptoms, and the difference between latent TB and active TB. Special emphasis was given to the alarming rise in multidrug-resistant TB (MDR-TB) and extensively drug-resistant TB (XDR-TB). The speaker highlighted statistics from the World Health Organization (WHO), underscoring TB as a leading cause of death worldwide. Challenges such as delayed diagnosis, drug resistance, and treatment non-adherence were discussed in detail.
The session ended with an interactive Q&A, where students and participants asked insightful questions about practical challenges in TB management. The speaker addressed queries related to drug resistance, patient counseling techniques, and the integration of pharmacists into national TB control programs.
The guest lecture provided a comprehensive understanding of the clinical and public health aspects of tuberculosis and the indispensable role of clinical pharmacists in its management. The session was highly informative and left the audience with valuable knowledge about their potential contributions to combating TB.
