“CONTEMPORARY ISSUES AND CHALLENGES IN LABOUR LAWS- AN OVERVIEW”

Objectives of the Seminar: The main objective of this seminar was to acquaint the students of Maharishi Law School with existing labor laws in our country, the functioning of labor laws in society, and the contemporary challenges in making the Labor Laws.
The seminar started with the felicitation of the guest speakers. They were honored by Prof. Dr. K.B. Asthana (Dean) and Associate Professor Dr. Amitha Rathi (Deputy Dean) with shawls and mementos as a token of appreciation. The seminar was co-chaired by Prof. Dr. K.B. Asthana, Associate Professor Dr. Amitha Rathi, and Assistant Professor Dr. Swapnil Pandey.
The seminar provided a comprehensive view of Labor Laws and their significance. The panelists connected the Labor Laws with ancient civilizations. Dr. Onkar’s insights related to Labor Laws were very enlightening for the law students. Dr. Onkar elaborated on the origination of Labor Laws and their connection with our ancient civilizations and also the British Era. Expert facilitation encouraged interactive discussions, fostering a dynamic learning environment for all students of the law school.
Some judgments and amendments were also discussed, making the lecture more interactive for the students, which helped them to engage with the panelists and understand the basic concepts of Labor Laws. Basic duties and rights of employees were explained for better understanding. The four codes of Labor Laws, consolidating 29 laws related to Labor Laws, were mentioned in the lecture, helping the students enhance their ability to grasp the concept. Furthermore, Prof. S.C. Srivastava briefly explained Labor Laws, Social Security, and the gaps present in Labor Laws. Prof. Pravin Sinha discussed the outdatedness of some provisions of Labor Laws, emphasizing that law and society are dynamic in nature and subject to change with time.
After the lecture related to Labor Laws was delivered by our speakers, Dr. Onkar Sharma familiarized students with the "e-shram" portal through which all low-wage workers or gig workers can register themselves and claim benefits of schemes introduced by the Central Government and State Governments. The PMC Scheme was also highlighted, through which some unorganized groups of people receive pensions after retirement. The criteria and process were outlined for the students.
Overall, the seminar provided students with valuable insights about Labor Laws and the challenges being faced. The lecture was interactive, with questions posed to the speakers. The participation of all the students was of high quality. With experts exploring key issues, participants gained a deeper understanding of the challenges and opportunities associated with Labor Laws. The discussion underscored the role of students in contributing to the development of Labor Laws.
Lastly, Assistant Professor Arun Kumar delivered the vote of thanks, expressing gratitude to all the guests for their elaborate explanations on Labor Laws. Maharishi Law School is thankful to them for their time spent at our college premises.
