Law School

LLM

OBJECTIVE AND DESCRIPTION

Students who wish to gain expertise in a specific domain of law can pursue an LL.M. with specialisation. LL.M. is a postgraduate degree in law being taught at the university as the scope of legal matters is expanding rapidly and various industries now seek legal experts in their domain. The LL.M. degree course curriculum is designed to enhance the basics of legal knowledge learned in an undergraduate course. It is divided into four semesters. For a one year programme, the same programme is divided into two semesters. In the Master of Law programme, students gain in-depth knowledge of a specific field of law through extensive research, study, and classroom discussions.

Eligibility Conditions: Candidates should possess at least 50% marks or an equivalent grade [45% for SC/ST Candidates] in their three- or five-year LL.B. degree from a university recognized by the UGC and approved by BCI.

Why LL.M.

It is advisable to pursue an LL.M. course after graduating from law school, as an LL.M. programme will help you sharpen legal skills and get started proactively in your legal career. Listed below are a few of the most compelling reasons to pursue LL.M. programmes.

  • Prepares for an International Career: An LL.M. with a specialization in International Law will help students dominate in the international arena and eventually help them make a career in the international legal domain, ensuring a promising future.
  • Focuses Your Interests: Unlike undergraduate law courses that cover law in general, the LL.M. programme allows you to specialize in a specific field. This eventually allows you to concentrate on the subject and give it more attention, allowing you to become an expert in it.
  • Broad Specializations: The array of specializations available in LL.M. courses will assist students in choosing a career in a wide range of specializations such as international law, corporate law, labour law, and human rights, among others.
  • Pursue a Career in Legal Writing and Research: Depending on the LL.M. specialization, pursuing an LL.D. after an LL.M. allows you to pursue a career in legal research and writing.
  • Better Job Prospects: An LL.M. degree will get you a higher salary and more opportunities than a bachelor's degree in law.

LL.M. programmes at MUIT:

Following LL.M. admission, both LL.M. programmes require regular classes. This programme is designed to be completed in one year.

Students who have been admitted to the LL.M. programme at MUIT can expect to study some common papers in the first semester. Students will, however, begin taking subjects based on the specializations they have chosen for their master's degree in law in the second semester. They will also have the opportunity to intern with law firms during the course to gain valuable practical experience. Both internal and external marks will be given equal weight throughout the course. The foundation courses are required for all students to take in the first semester of the degree, but beyond that, students can choose from a variety of elective courses based on their interests and intended areas of specialization.
